Understanding Chimney Inspections: Level 1 vs. Level 2

Regular chimney inspections are critical for keeping your fireplace safe, efficient, and functioning properly. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211 standards), chimney inspections fall into distinct levels depending on your situation.

Here is what you need to know about Level 1 and Level 2 chimney inspections, when they are required, and what each entails.

Level 1 Chimney Inspection: Routine Maintenance

A Level 1 inspection is the standard checkup for chimneys that are in regular use and experiencing no known issues.

When Is a Level 1 Inspection Needed?

  • You are performing routine annual chimney maintenance.

  • Your heating system, fuel type, and appliance have not changed.

  • You use your fireplace or stove under the exact same conditions as prior years.

  • There are no performance issues or signs of damage.

What Does a Level 1 Inspection Entail?

During a Level 1 inspection, a technician will examine all readily accessible interior and exterior parts of the chimney structure, flue liner, and appliance connections.

The technician will verify that:

  • The structure and flue are sound and free of blockages.

  • There is no dangerous buildup of combustible soot or creosote.

  • All connections between the appliance and chimney are secure and intact.

Level 2 Chimney Inspection: Changes, Sales & Events

A Level 2 inspection is a more detailed, in-depth evaluation required when changes occur to the property, the system, or following a potential hazard.

When Is a Level 2 Inspection Needed?

  • Home Sale or Property Transfer: Required during real estate transactions to ensure buyer safety and full transparency.

  • System Modifications: Necessary if you change fuel types (e.g., switching from wood to gas), replace the heating appliance, or reline the chimney flue.

  • Severe Weather or Operational Incidents: Required after a chimney fire, structural building fire, earthquake, lightning strike, or major storm that may have compromised the chimney's integrity.

What Does a Level 2 Inspection Entail?

A Level 2 inspection includes everything in a Level 1 inspection, plus:

  • Video Camera Flue Scanning: A specialized camera is lowered through the entire length of the flue liner to inspect for hidden cracks, broken tile flues, gap separations, or unseen masonry damage.

  • Expanded Access Check: Inspection of accessible areas such as attics, basements, and crawlspaces where the chimney passes through structural framing.

  • Non-Destructive: No removal of walls, ceilings, or permanent building structures is required.
